Blind purchase? Yes! In March 2024, I began searching for a new partner for my life. Although I had bred and ridden Westphalian horses for many years, I was looking for a young Iberian mare. She needed to be healthy, pretty, and lightly trained. I also wanted to keep the option of competing open. So I started my search. I had seen and tried some beautiful PRE horses, but a friend insisted that I had to look at Lusitanos. So I called various Lusitano breeders in Germany. If there were any horses available at all, some breeders had the idea that I was allowed to look at the horses but not try them? So my friend recommended Sonja Niedermaier. We spoke on the phone several times, for quite a long time, and I explained exactly what I was looking for and how much I wanted to spend. We knew it could be difficult. She sent me a few videos and photos. The first mare I liked did not pass the vet check performed by a very thorough veterinarian. Then nothing happened for a while. I was very close to buying a wonderful young PRE mare in Germany—but unfortunately, she was only three years old. And then the video of Pimenta arrived. She stood out from the others for me. Not because of outstanding movement, but because of her presence. Alright, we talked on the phone and Sonja sent a rider to try her and record a video according to my wishes. I liked her more and more. The vet check was good; only her height was at the lower limit and the price at the upper one. I decided to take the plunge and buy her. Sonja handled all the formalities perfectly—purchase contract, transport, transfer of papers, etc. I could not have managed that without her. And on June 3rd, 2024, the time had come. Pimenta arrived! And now? Many people were concerned that I had made a huge mistake. Far from it. I gave us time to get to know each other through groundwork, walks, and shared quality time. And now? I have a “horse of a lifetime” here. Often more Labrador than horse—affectionate, brave, and always cheerful when working. She is versatile and willing to do anything.
